An earlier version of this page was wrong

It listed three practices under the sentence "every practice below was named by someone who actually goes there," and that sentence was not true of them. They have been removed. Every version is still readable in the history — nothing was deleted, the correction sits on top. It is worth knowing this happened, because the only thing this list has over a comment thread is that a name in it came from a person.

Worth knowing before you call anyone

• Newborn visitsMost practices want the first visit within three to five days of coming home. Call while you are still at the hospital; the early slots go fast.
• After hoursAsk what the answering-service policy actually is before you need it at 2am. The answers vary a lot and the websites do not say. None of the three above publish one.
• "Accepts" is not "participates"A practice that accepts your insurance can still balance-bill you. One that participates with your plan cannot. Ask using those words.
• Check the licence yourselfNew York State publishes physician licence status and any disciplinary history at op.nysed.gov. It takes a minute and it is the one check nobody thinks to do.
